The NPCs know what you've done. All and all, a good little game to spend a week on that leaves you wishing for more.. Dex is a hard game to review. It's certain that an awful lot of work went into making this game, and a lot of love went into the crafting such a detailed world, but ultimately Dex fell flat for me.Graphically speaking, the sprite work is detailed and lovely, and the cyberpunk city of Harbour Prime feels real and lived in. I have no problem with the look of Dex. It's gritty, and neon, and hyper-urban as cyber punk demands. Its facade is rote, but not stale. I also liked Dex's freedom of movement; traversing Harbour Prime was a breeze & a pleasure. Jumping and rolling and running are all satisfying. It's a small thing, but it really makes the platforming flow. The story is pretty standard fair—as always, you play "The One" who can safe the world, or doom it. The characters are perfunctory, but none were memorable, save for maybe Raycast. The storyline and characters all function for getting you from one point to another, and never get in the way of the gameplay. While the game does try to hint at grand plans and dark mysteries, it's never exciting, and there's little pay-off to the narrative. While Dex is a hybrid—one part action platformer, and one part shooter, with a dash of stealth thrown in—none of the action elements are thrilling. I easily got through most of the game by using stealth kills, but it was too easy for my tastes and wasn't as satisfying as in MGS or Tenchu. As for the gunplay—it's just as terrible as you've heard, I will say no more. The few instances where I had to stand my ground were a dull experience of holding the block button while pressing punch, until I could just hack my opponents, stun them & punch them even more. For all of the options that Dex gives you, the fighting and the gunplay are shallow & every enemy can be dispatched in the same manor. The hacking-by-way-of-Sinistar isn't much better—you encounter all of the "viruses" you'll ever fight with in the first hour of the game, & they never get more complex. And the bosses in cyber space can all be dispatched by circling them slowly in one direction and shooting them until they explode. You just spin in a circle while holding the left-mouse button. To be fare, dull hacking mini-games are pretty common; I think the only time I found hacking to be really fun in a game was in "Pony Island."All in all, Dex is not a bad game. It was clearly made with heart. But, with its dull plot, shallow gameplay, and bland characters, I can't recommend Dex to anyone. Skip it, play something more fun.. Dex is a hard game to review. Update: Hi everyone! We have been closely following your feedback and there are indeed a few issues that need to be addressed, most particularly the controls remapping and the save bug near the end.We are currently looking into those and will be able to provide a fix for them on Monday. We are also taking all of your other feedback into account and will continuously update the game throughout the coming weeks. We apologise for the inconvenience and we thank you for your support and patience! The Dex team.. Dex Release Candidate: Hi all,This is probably one of the final updates – if not the very final – prior to the actual launch of Dex. All the voice acting is in, all the music, all the sounds, all the content. The game can be played as a whole, from the very beginning to the very end. However, there are still bits and pieces that could use some extra polish, and there may still be bugs here and there. And that is the core of our message today: We could use your help with testing the game! Any feedback, any bug reports you can offer might affect the final quality of the game upon release. We do not intend to do any radical changes from this point forward, but we want to be able to tie up all the loose ends. We can also use your feedback as to balancing. Although we did a couple of playtesting rounds, your opinion will be valuable to tweak the game difficulty and deal with possible difficulty spikes in some of the locations, as well as in the individual datafortresses in cyberspace. Please do not feel pressured to play the game now. If you prefer to have the complete experience, we strongly encourage you to wait. Rest assured – the release of Dex is very close at hand. However, if you want to participate in the final testing and balancing, come join us!How to get to the Release Candidate build? As with the Dex Beta build, we decided to publish this build as “Steam Beta” only. This replaces the previous Beta build from March. The very original build from December (without main storyline) still remains the default game new players get to play upon launching the game normally. If you want to participate in the testing, you need to right-click on Dex in your Steam library, select Properties, go to the tab BETAS and select “Dex – Public Beta” in the drop-down menu! We’ll be on the lookout for your feedback!Cheers!Dex DevelopersPS: We plan to release the game soon! Stay tuned!. Soundtrack is now available!: Hi everyone! We are proud to announce that today we have released the original orchestral soundtrack! You can now purchase Dex's soundtrack as DLC.Track List. Raw Dex Beta: Hi Everyone,As we promised earlier, we are here with Dex Beta! Before you get too hyped, there’s one important thing we need to say: It is far from polished and we didn’t manage to implement and finalize everyhing we wanted. We had a really tough time deciding whether to postpone it again (which sucks; we postponed the beta already!) or whether to release it in its current state. We finally came to a middle solution: We’ll put a big disclaimer, “Unpolished Beta,” on it to make sure you know what you are playing. (And yes, you are reading that disclaimer right now.) The main reason it feels unpolished is that although we have most of the stuff done – basically everything between Start and End – the very start (first two locations) and the very end (last chapter) are in rough-sketch form (not only visually, but also in terms of sound, music, and design). Now, what is there:You can play the whole game from the start (intro, Dex’s flat) all the way up to “labs” (let’s not be more specific, so we don’t spoil your experience!). There are dozens of new locations and NPCs as compared to the older build from December/January. So if you overlook the missing bits and pieces, we believe you’ll be pleased with the progress we’ve made and the amount of work that has been done! What is not there:The very beginning is unfinished, both as to gameplay and graphics. The last chapter we decided to cut for now (very work-in-progress). The hacking/cyberspace functionality is there, but it is very raw. It should be functional enough for you to see how it feels and how the system is generally designed – and to give feedback on – but it is probably the least polished gameplay system at this point, and it could still use a fair amount of visual, sound, and gameplay tweaking. Who is it for?We strongly encourage everyone who simply wants to enjoy the game to wait for the final release, as the many final polishing touches, the inclusion of voice acting, and the final rounds of testing, bugfixing and balancing will make a huge difference to your gameplay experience. On the other hand, we welcome everyone brave enough to dive deep into the beta to give us feedback, report bugs, and generally paw through it and help us push the project to the finish line. So, if you want to go digging in the dirt and help us build the thing – or if you are curious and want to check the current state and new additions – come right in! But don’t say you weren’t warned! ;-)How to get there? We decided to publish this build as “Steam Beta” only. Therefore, the older build from December (with fewer features and less content, but much more polished overall) will still be the default branch that you launch normally through Steam client when clicking Play. If you want to participate in the beta, you need to right-click on Dex in your Steam library, select Properties, go to tab BETAS and select “Dex - Public Beta” in the drop-down menu! We’ll be watching forums on Kickstarter, as well as here on Steam, for bug reports and feedback – and we’ll get back to you soon with new exciting updates! We’re almost there, so keep your fingers crossed!. Localizations Incoming: Hi everyone,Just a brief notice this time: We have several translations in the works, most of them almost done. We’ll post detailed information about exact release dates a bit later, but for now you may expect German, French and Czech versions at the end of June or early July with high possibility of Hungarian, Polish and several other languages soon to follow! Also, we are now working on the free DLC as promised, more news also coming in 1-2 weeks from now.Cheers!Dex Devs. Dex Steam Early Alpha #2: Hi Cyberfolks! We are back after two months of radio silence with a new major update. The notable improvements, tweaks, and additions include: Completely reworked GUI system – Not visible to players, but for us it was a necessary prerequisite for future development, for full gamepad support, and for future support of console versions. Full controller support – Simply put, you don’t even need a mouse or keyboard. You can access all menus and options, as well as core gameplay, using the gamepad. Options and Settings screen – You are now able to set graphics quality manually, which we suggest doing if you experience performance issues. Also, Options enables you to set key/button mappings for keyboard, mouse, and gamepad.Improved controls and faster reaction times – Resulting in smoother combat. Try it for yourself and let us know how it feels!Enhanced combat AI – We improved combat not only via the controls and smoother reaction times, but also via tweaks to the AI. While we expect to continually improve and elaborate on combat till the final full release, we feel the current version is more fun than the version we presented at Gamescom and released here on Steam in August. Check it for yourself and let us know what you think!Vastly overhauled sound design – We added several dozen new sound assets. Most of these are dedicated to environmental sound, specific for each location. The city center now sounds livelier, you can literally hear the atmosphere all around you and experience the noise of the crowded streets, police car sirens, and even gunshots in the neighborhoods. Major optimizations – We performed another set of major optimizations, some of them related to the new GUI system, some related to graphics, particles, and AI. The game should now run more smoothly on all PCs. We would appreciate your feedback here – if you experienced performance issues earlier, let us know how it works now!Numerous minor fixes and improvements – All around the game. Over the past few months, we have tweaked, fixed, or improved hundreds of minor issues. For more information, details and news, please follow to our recent Kickstarter update dedicated to the new build.. Weekend Update (2.0.2.4): Hi boys and girls! We’re still not done with our patches, so here’s yet another one, taking into account some of your feedback:- Improved the last part of the game to make it more clear and understandable. This means various visual and audio tweaks which will hopefully convey the message better.- Also improved the GSV-2 fight sequence to give some more audiovisual feedback.- Fixed a bug which caused A.J. to sometimes still be there even after her quest was completed.- Fixed some visual bugs in Cyberspace.- Fixed more UI bugs in the Inventory and Character screens.- Fixed UI bugs in the Load menu.- Fixed a bug which sometimes allowed you to take the Laser Gun without opening the glass case.- Fixed the remapping of the AR/Cyberspace controls for keyboard (also for Linux).- A few more quest logic bugs (not detailed to avoid spoilers).- A few balancing improvements. That should be it until Monday, unless something big pops up. So enjoy the weekend!Your Dex team. Weekend Update: Hi everyone! We’re releasing yet another patch today, with a whole new list of big and small fixes. Let’s get right to it!- Fixed the dialog bug which caused certain NPC lines to be repeated twice.- Fixed the scrolling in the Journal and Quest Log menus using a controller.- Fixed the bug where clicking a Journal entry caused the cursor to skip half the list.- The controls for Cyberspace can now also be remapped for the keyboard (particularly useful for AZERTY users).- Fixed the gas valves in the Sewers, so they do not reset their position when you change location.- Fixed the bug where the pistons would kill Dex upon touching her even when they were not going down.- Fixed the bug where you disabled the Docks turrets via hacking and they re-appeared when you left and came back.- Tony’s inventory will not be restocked every time you travel back to him now.- Fixed some navigation issues with the Trading screen when using a controller.- Fixed the bug which allowed you to re-open Lily’s safe (and loot it) infinitely (sorry to those who liked to abuse it!)- Fixed the bug that caused an autosave to trigger just as you loaded a save.- Fixed the Level 6 Melee skill which didn’t work as advertised (Power Kick is now unblockable).- Fixed the tooltips in AR describing the effects of skills: they now update correctly as you level up those skills.- Fixed the bug where destroyed cameras and turrets would re-appear when you re-entered a location.- Added the Mirrorshade implant to the list of available implants from Dr Niles. This implant allows you to use the item Mirrorshade Cloak, very useful if you like to use stealth (makes you invisible for 8 seconds).- Linux only issue with the Down/Crouch key being hardcoded to “S”: should be fine now, just make sure you manually assign it to whatever key you want in the Options menu for the change to take effect.- Added missing icons for secondary skills Charisma, AR and Barter in the Character menu.- Adjusted dialog text to match audio recording for some characters.- Fixed missing audio for certain dialog lines.- And several more minor ones!We wish you a great weekend, and we’ll keep monitoring your feedback!Your Dex team
